Recent advances in technology have allowed the chinese government to hack into the secrets of american companies and steal proprietary information.
How is america going to handle this?
All of us have phones, all of us most likely have some sort of
online sharing site, such as Facebook or Twitter. And all of us are vulnerable
to hacking and cyber spying. I know you’ve probably been told that countless
times; to make sure your privacy settings are always on, don’t open any fishy
emails, etc. but the thing is, you don’t think it’ll happen to you until it does happen to you.
How vulnerable are you?
Foreign countries (mainly China) have been spying on the U.S
since the dawn of time. At first they were just military soldiers from foreign
countries physically coming to the U.S and going into our factories and stealing
the blueprints directly from the office; but because of technology and the
invention of the internet, hackers have been able to infiltrate anything and
everything that is on the web. Even the webcam on your laptop. Creepy, right?
Technology isn't all sunshine and smiles:
As a result from advances in technology, this has allowed hacking to be easier,
faster, and anonymous. This advancement in technology can be related to Chapter 1 in human geography because it can be tied into space-time compression. It relates to space-time
compression because technology has made the distance traveled by hackers much
smaller and stealing proprietary information easier.
Back in the olden days, when governments were physically sending their spies over
to other countries to infiltrate their secrets it was more dangerous and they
were always on guard. But now, infiltrating the data bases of a company's secrets is as easy as counting to 3.
I have gathered this information from actual pamphlets and brochures about cyber crime from the F.B.I building itself; as well as reliable videos about this topic from websites such as CNN.com and Ted Talks.
The accused:
Recently, America accused five Chinese men of accessing the
trade and manufacturing secrets of five big American companies: Westinghouse Electric
Company, USS steel company, Solar World, Alleghany Technology, Alcoa, and United
Steelworkers Union. These are the men who were accused:

How is America reacting to this?
While America is trying to tell other countries that infiltrating our companies and stealing our secrets is unacceptable, we still deciding on how to handle this phenomenon. The World Trade Organization is contemplating on whether they should tackle this case under already exisiting rules. The U.S has tried multiple times to talk to China about their spying and stealing of our trade secrets, but they have finally reached their limit. For example, Mr. Obama warned the Chinese leader, Mr. Xi, that if they did not put an end to this hacking then it would ruin their broader relationship.
How is China reacting?
According to the New York Times, China is being predictable about their actions. They have suspended the dialouge on cybersecurity, they demand that indictments be withdrawn, and threats of retaliation against American companies.
What's the future look like?
I found this topic most interesting because I feel like cyber crime is something people never think about, and it is becoming more and more frequent even as we speak. In my opinion, I believe that the future of America's cybercrime cases will get worse before they get better. As technology advances, so will the hackers and the more valuable the trade secrets will become. I think that everyone, not just America, could take precautionary measures as to keeping everything safe. Because I think we all know now (atleast I hope we all know) that nothing is ever safe on the internet, nothing.
