AMERICAN CULTURE HAS AFFECTED MEDIA IN OTHER COUNTRIES
American media has affected many countries through culture. This is mainly because America has a large market. American has a domestic market of over 300 million people and there are over two billion people in the world that speak English, which is a large contributor to the fact that so many people watch American TV.
America has founded the first international news network, CNN. Also, the use of personal computers and the world wide web started in the USA. American media has a basic idea that attracts everyone. It is said (where? according to a source?) that younger people are more eager to embrace American culture than older people. The best example is MTV. MTV convinces people to buy products they don't even need such as clothing items. (try using a different font color- pretty hard to read)
India has adopted many American TV shows. For example, there was an Indian Fear Factor and reality dance competition called Boogie Woogie. Also, they have a popular singing competition called Indian Idol. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The titles have changed to adapt to the religion and culture. (Can you give an example of how the titles take religion and culture in to account?) Two other TV shows India uses is Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Deal Ya No Deal.
Many countries have tried to stop the spread of American media in their country for many different reasons such as religion or government. Countries in Europe have passed protectionist measures to maintain the increase of the film industry domestically. This has affected America negatively since the share of American films overseas has decreased. In Canada, U.S cultural products dominate Canadian products despite the Canadian's government efforts to preserve local culture. (maybe speak specifically about Quebec trying to prevent American English culture) Meanwhile, France has banned Anglican words such as Facebook, blog and email. They have also banned them on French TV and in government publications. On average, 47 percent of the world population views U.S influence on the world as negative and 38 percent see them as a positive impact on the world. The other 15 percent didn't answer either way. Connection to APHG
This topic has to do with Chapters 1,4,5, and 6. In Chapter One, it talks about the connections between places and culture. It also talks about the globalization of culture. Media is a good example of space time compression. In Chapter 4, it talks about Popular and Folk Culture and the role of television in diffusing popular cultures. In Chapter 5, it talks about language and English on the Internet. Finally, in Chapter 6, it talks about religion and that relates to how religion is spread through media.
Overall, I chose this topic because I have always wondered if media actually changes the people in other countries. That question has been answered as true. I was really surprised that some countries said that American culture was a positive change on their country. Also, it surprised me that some countries would go the extra step and actually ban Anglican words just to protect their culture.
