According to Ethnologue some factors that contribute to languages dying are:
- The amount of people that speak that language in an area
- Migration patterns of speakers
- The use of second languages
- Age range of speakers
- If children are being taught the language at home of at school
Effect of Pidgin languages and lingua francas
Pidgin language are hurting languages that are endangered because the pidgin language is the mixing of two languages to a point that the two people can understand each other. If this understanding is permanent then the less known language will not be needed as much and the dominant language will slowly start to take over that language. The language that is less know will not be needed and wont have to be taught to the children of area, this is a slow killer of languages.
When a lingua franca is adopted it can hurt an endangered language because lingua francas are used for business and business brings in money, so people who care more about their economic stability invest more time in learning a language that can boost up their income. An example of this would be India and they adopted English. Although this did not necessarily hurt India's linguistic diversity, it does show that since English would help the economy they wanted for their people to learn it because it would help the Country's future.

Effect of pop culture on language
The extinction of languages is also brought upon by people who want to learn other dominant business languages and so they slowly start to care less about the languages they have and want to learn languages that will help them economically. People also think that knowing a popular language means you are of some higher class than other people which is an effect of pop culture.
The video above brings up the notion that if there are only a few people speaking a language why should it be cared about. This is something that comes from pop culture, since the language is not popular there is no motivation for people to learn it. And these little known languages have no benefits to them, besides knowing a language that other people don't.

Connections and why i chose language extinction
This is connected to AP Human Geography through chapter 5 because that chapter all about languages but not much of language extinction, but it does tell us about how lingua francas are formed through two groups of people who are trying to speak to each other for some kind of benefit. Or they could have a pidgin language which is a simplified form of a language.
I chose this subject because I find the life cycles of languages interesting and I wanted to know why and how they stop existing.
